A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed in dentistry to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is commonly performed in preparation for dental implant placement when there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw due to the proximity of the maxillary sinuses. Here's an overview of how a sinus lift procedure is typically performed:

Here's an overview of how a sinus lift procedure is typically performed:

Evaluation and Treatment Planning: Before the sinus lift, the dentist or oral surgeon will evaluate the patient's dental and medical history, perform a thorough examination, and review radiographic images such as X-rays or CT scans. This assessment helps determine the need for a sinus lift and guides the treatment planning process.

Anesthesia: The patient is typically administered local anesthesia to numb the surgical area. In some cases, sedation or general anesthesia may also be used to ensure comfort during the procedure. Incision and Access: The oral surgeon makes a small incision in the gum tissue near the back of the upper jaw, creating a flap to expose the underlying bone.

Access to the Sinus: The oral surgeon carefully lifts the sinus membrane upward from the underlying bone, creating a space between the membrane and the sinus floor.

Bone Graft Placement: The newly created space in the sinus is filled with bone graft material. The bone graft can be obtained from various sources, such as the patient's own bone (autograft), donor bone (allograft), or synthetic bone substitute. The bone graft material serves as a scaffold for new bone growth and helps stimulate the body's natural healing process.

Closure: After the bone graft is placed, the incision is sutured closed, and the surgical site is protected with gauze. Healing and Integration: Over the following months, the bone graft material integrates with the surrounding bone, promoting new bone growth and increasing the bone volume in the upper jaw. This healing period allows for the development of a solid foundation to support dental implants

Once the sinus lift has successfully increased the amount of bone in the upper jaw, dental implant placement can be performed. The timing of implant placement will depend on the individual's healing progress and the treatment plan outlined by the dental professional. A sinus lift is a specialized procedure that requires the expertise of an oral surgeon or a dentist with advanced training in implant dentistry. They will evaluate your specific case, determine if a sinus lift is necessary, and guide you through the entire process, ensuring optimal outcomes for dental implant treatment in the upper jaw.
